What is Assisted Living?

Assisted living is designed for older adults who are no longer able to safely and healthily live on their own, but do not require high levels of care. On-site 24/7 healthcare services such as health monitoring and medication management allow residents to feel safe and supported to participate in an active and healthy day-to-day routine.

Like independent living, assisted living strives to keep an active lifestyle. Some senior living communities specialize in memory care, providing neighborhoods designed for safety and trained staff to serve those with memory loss.

This lifestyle allows seniors to remain as active as possible while receiving the health and medical support they need. These communities offer:

Social events and/or outings

Prepared meals

Therapy and rehabilitation programs

Communal living

Health and medical support

Beautiful apartment homes

Assisted living gives seniors and their families the peace of mind they can maintain aspects of their lifestyle while having access to a wide range of medical services.

Types of Care include:

Home Care

Respite Care

Home Health

Hospice

Memory Care

What Services Do Assisted Living Communities Provide?

Services often include:

  • One to three meals a day

  • Monitoring of medication

  • Personal care, including dressing and bathing

  • Housekeeping and laundry

  • 24-hr emergency care

  • Medical services

  • Social and recreational services

Talking with family members and caregivers about the type of care needed is important for better care. Take time to consider what services are important before visiting a community. These questions may help to find the best community:

  • What do I want/need to change my living arrangements?

  •  What daily activities do I need help with (bathing, dressing, toileting, eating, medication management)?

  • How often do I need help?

Benefits of Assisted Living

Communities may vary from high-rise apartments to multi-acre campuses, the only focus is to treat all residents with dignity, provide privacy, and encourage independence. The resident's quality of life has significantly improved along with their family members. Designated caregivers are kept updated about their loved one's progress and are part of the care planning process.

People who would benefit from these communities have experienced the following:

  • At least one fall, with or without injury

  • Difficulty in preparing a meal

  • Nutritional needs are not being met

  • Difficulty moving around the house

  • Difficulty in daily activities such as getting dressed, managing medication

  • Worries regarding isolation and/or safety
