Respite Care 

Why Respite Care:

Respite care is a senior living option that provides short-term relief assisted living for primary caregivers. It may range from just an afternoon to several days or weeks.

Adult Day Centers/Programs

Respite Care Facilities

​​Respite care may be for someone who has a condition like:

Cancer

Brain Injury

Alzheimer's/Dementia

Blindness

It offers a safe, comfortable place for your loved one with trained providers to supervise and care for them.

​Some of the activities may include:

Bathe

Dress

Eat or drink

Take medications

Exercise

Enjoy the outdoors

Get in and out of bed

​Respite care groups may be available at assisted-living facilities, adult day care centers, or community centers. These programs may include activities such as music, dance, art classes, group meals, entertainment, or a chance to socialize with others.

Types of Respite Care:

Respite Care at Home 

In-Home respite care providers may act as companions while providing supervision. It may aid in daily housekeeping activities such as laundry, meal prep, cleaning, etc...

Adult Day Centers/Programs

Adult day centers provide short-term supervision lasting a few hours. Some may offer activities such as exercise, music classes, and meals prepped by trained staff. Some may have included transport to pick up/drop off your loved one. 

Respite Care Facilities

Assisted living facilities may offer short-term stays for respite care. It is also known as short-term assisted living or residential respite care. 
They provide a safe and comfortable apartment, room, or suite with trained staff to provide 24/7 care. They aid in normal
day-to-day activities while also providing activities such as supervised outings, hair stylists, and religious services.

Respite Care Facilities may include: 

  • Help with everyday activities like bathing and dressing, meal preparation, and household tasks to enable independence and safety. 

  • Non-medical care, home health aide services, senior care, homemaker care, assistive care, or companionship.

  • Therapeutic activities such as art, singing, and age-appropriate games.

  • Medical services include health monitoring, and physical, occupational, or speech therapy.

  • Non-medical services in social work and dietary counseling

  • Overnight to short-term care in an apartment, suite, or room with daily catering and housekeeping 

  • Companionship and engaging in hobbies and activities

How Is it Paid: 

Respite Care at Home services:

  • Health Insurance 

  • Private insurance

Adult Day Centers / Programs services: 

Adult day centers may be paid through a variety of sources, including: 

  • Private Pay 

  • Health Insurance 

  • Veterans benefits 

  • Workers' compensation 

  • Medicaid (with qualifications) 

  • Direct payment by the person receiving care (private pay) 

Respite Care Facilities services: 

Short-term residential facilities services are typically private pay. Other funding sources may be: 

  • Health Insurance 

  • Veterans Benefits

  • Worker's Compensation

How Is Care Provided

Respite Care at Home services:

​Respite Care at Home does not need to be prescribed by a doctor. Care is provided on an ongoing basis on a schedule that meets a client's needs, up to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including possible live-in care.

Adult Day Centers/Programs services: 

Adult Day Centers/Programs do not need to be prescribed by a doctor. Care is provided during the daytime on a scheduled basis depending on availability at the program. 

Respite Care Facilities services: 

Respite Care Facilities do not need to be prescribed by a doctor. Care is provided in shifts, up to 24 hours a day lasting the client's short-term stay.
